The levels we played were gritty, dirt-ridden cityscapes, and the game does a good job of conveying decay. In addition, the surroundings you battle in are quite well-rendered. The weapons that you acquire produce some amazing fire effects, and the translucent shields are a wonder to behold. Phantom Dust boasts some of the best visual effects we've seen in an Xbox title, and that's saying a lot. We didn't get an opportunity to explore to what degree this extends, but did get to explode an entire floor from under an enemy during the demo. Walls, obstacles and even the floor is destructible. What feels even better is destroying the environments, Otogi-style. The battle system is fluid and fun, and the weapons feel good. Triggers handle the targeting, and the skills you acquire-from huge fireballs, to lava grenades, to energy shields, are assigned to whatever button you wish when you pick them up. The control is simply to grasp and quite responsive. In this build, the ally was CPU-controlled, but perhaps with Xbox Live, there will be co-op.
Your goal in each mission is simply to locate and kill a number of creatures that are scattered throughout the map, and you'll have the help of an ally. The gameplay dynamic involves battling various enemies using acquired skills skills that you find in the form of orbs at the beginning of each mission.
In the missions we played, we tangled with something that looked like a meatball wrapped in chitin, and a floating eyeball creature.
Dust currently is without a US release date, but we're confident that with the progress it's making, a stateside offering would only make sense… Where does the title " Phantom Dust" come from? Perhaps from the legions of supernatural enemies you face during the course of your battles. This morning at the Microsoft booth at the Tokyo Game Show, we got yet another opportunity to play the game, and it's looking good.
